Claim-reason-evidence-warrant:
“. . . every argument, research or not, is built out of answers to five questions . . . questions that you must ask yourself on your reader’s behalf:

• What is my claim?
• What reasons support my claim?
• What evidence supports my reasons?
• What principle makes my reasons relevant to my claim? (We call this principle a warrant.)”

• I claim that ONE mechanism underlying bar diagramming is that it affords subjects the OPPORTUNITY to “add leaves to their realization trees” by engaging in MR (multimodal representation)
• REASONS: distributed cognition; theory of binumeracy; appropriation of sign; UMR SOLO cycle; diagram-gesture-agency theory; embodied cognition in mathematics
• PRINCIPLES: the complementarity of the two functions of sign; math as a SFMD; defining one’s mathematical understanding of a signifier as one’s realization tree for a mathematical signifier; MRC (multimodal representational competency)
