There are many types of fitness equipment available, so it can be difficult to keep track of them all. New equipment and innovations are constantly being introduced to the fitness industry. This can make it difficult for newcomers. We’ve compiled a list that covers the most commonly used terms in fitness equipment. If applicable, we have also listed which body parts the equipment targets. This list will help you understand terms like ergometers, P80 consoles, and smith machines. This list includes all of the names we could find for fitness equipment and we continue to add to it.

Abs Bench

Body Parts Targeted - abdominals
An ab bench is a type of fitness bench that’s at a decline. It usually has padded leg rollers that allow you to hook your feet or to do a crunch or sit up. These benches can also be adjusted to allow for different types of exercises.
Adjustable Bench

They are similar to a flat-bench, but can be adjusted to become an incline, flat, or decline bench.
AMT
Precor AMT is an abbreviation of the all-in-one elliptical trainer. It can change strides and adapt to the user’s needs without any manual adjustments.
Arc Trainer

Assisted Chin Dip
Category - Strength
Targeted Body Parts: triceps and deltoids, pectorals. Abdominals, biceps.
A tower with two protruding rods is an assisted chin dip machine. Some machines require the user to either stand or kneel on a platform. To perform the exercise, the user must start with their arms bent at 90 degrees.

Curl Bench

Sometimes called a preacher curl. This bench is similar to a chair with a cushioned section at the front. The user can curl their arms by placing their arm on the cushioned section of the bench.
Cybex
They are one of the most prominent manufacturers of fitness equipment. They specialize in the production of strength equipment, with more than 150 pieces. Cybex is also well-known for its innovative Arc Trainer cardio machines.
Decline Bench

A weight bench in which the user’s legs extend higher than their heads. This is useful for bench presses that target lower portions of the chest.
Elliptical

An elliptical, a stationary cardio machine, simulates running and climbing. The elliptical allows users to stand on pedals, which makes it a low-impact workout. Many ellipticals also come with movable arms that can be used to work the upper body. Sometimes referred to as an “elliptical cross-trainer” or a “cross-trainer”.
Ergometer This confusing term is used. An ergometer is a device that measures your stats like heart rate, calories burned, and distance run. Indoor rowing machines can also be called an ergometer. For more information on this term, see rowing machine.
Flat Bench

Incline Bench

A weight bench in which the user’s head is higher than their legs. This is used in bench presses and curls.
Incline Press

An incline press machine, also known as a weight machine, consists of a chair with two handles in front of the user. These handles are attached to weights. To complete a repetition, the user extends their arms outwards and slowly returns them to their starting position.

Olympic Bench

Olympic benches are slightly bigger than standard benches, and they are usually made from composite steel for maximum durability. Olympic benches are more cushioned because they can withstand heavier weights and lifters.

Recumbent Bike

Recumbent bikes are exercise bikes that allow the user to recline while keeping their feet on the ground. Recumbent bikes are great for people with back problems, as there is no need to incline.
The laid-back position puts less pressure on the lower back.
Smith Machine

A smith machine, which is usually made up of vertical steel rails and used for weight training, is a machine that is usually composed of a smith machine. It can be used as a self-spotting device and a barbell. The smith machine has slots that can be used to hook a barbell on with a simple twist of the wrist. Safetyties are usually placed at the minimum height to catch the barbell, and to prevent injury. Smith Machines are used primarily for squats and only allow vertical movement.

Star Trac is a manufacturer of exercise equipment for home and commercial use, having been in business since 1979. Star Trac’s main products are the Pro Treadmill line, complete line of selectorized strength equipment, and many other items.
Stepmill

In that it has an infinite number of steps, a stepmill is similar to an escalator. The steps are attached to a belt which revolves with each step. Stepmills can be used to simulate stair climbing. They use your body weight as resistance which can help increase calories burned.
Stepper

Steppers have two pedals on each side that you use to climb stairs. Steppers are less dependent on your bodyweight and can be used by people who have less mass than necessary to move the stepmills. Steppers generally allow you to adjust the resistance level to increase intensity or difficulty of your workout.
Upright Bike

An upright bike is an exercise bicycle that allows the user to sit in an upright position similar to a road bike, and the pedals are almost below the seat. This upright position simulates real road biking and engages your core more than a recumbent bicycle.
Weight Bench
