Where did Zumba originate? Zumba is believed to have been created through Alberto “Beto” Perez a native of Cali Columbia, Alberto was in the late 1990’s an instructor of aerobics and fitness and was also a teacher of the classic moves that he was able to master and had been doing this for some time. However, as with many things they seem to come from nowhere and a happy accident or so.

Alberto was one day away from his routine aerobics at home and was forced to come up with improvised songs for the class. The thing Alberto did was to use mix tapes that he had made of the songs that he was raised with, such as Salsa and Merengue and, like a miracle, Alberto came up with a fresh way to dance to music , and one that would allow the music to really motivate you to move. This is how Zumba as a dance-inspired exercise and fitness program was born. A new method to gain fitness and health, and have enjoyment while doing it come to be.

In 1999, Alberto purchased Zumba in 1999. He then moved it to America after being approached by business men Alberto Perlman along with Alberto Aghion, they together chose the brand name Zumba Fitness. They registered their name Zumba. The following years, Zumba’s capabilities as a workout and fitness program became apparent. DVD’s were introduced and it being the Zumba Fitness Party brand really getting noticed, the first academy established to help new instructors learn how to instruct this dance-based fitness phenomenon.
