The mind and body are interdependent. You should include all employees to participate in your wellness program at work do you not?
The majority of wellness programs at work today aren’t really health programs at all. they are health management programs. Why am I saying this? Many wellness programs for work sites are focused on the physical health, and to the detriment of the other dimensions of health and wellness.
Based on the ideas of the modern wellness industry’s pioneers, (Robert Allen Donald Ardell, Halbert Dunn, Bill Hettler and John Travis) The concept of wellness is a multi-dimensional idea. The wellness model published by National Wellness Institute National Wellness Institute includes the following dimensions that include physical, social, psychological, intellectual, physical, spiritual and occupational.
Well-being in the emotional realm is linked to many health benefits as well as family, work and economic standing. Positive attitudes and a positive outlook on life are linked to a decreased chance of developing illness, disease and injury; better immunity; improved recovering and better coping and a longer life span. Furthermore mental health and mental illness could affect the health of your body and its biologic function. Positive mental health is linked with a better functioning endocrine system (i.e. less levels of cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine) and a better immune system response (i.e. greater antibody production and more resistance to illnesses). It has also been proven to be linked with longevity.
Researchers continue to discover more about the mind-body connection. It has been proven that emotions play an important influence on our physical well-being. It is also evident that there exists a connection between several chronic diseases as well as mental wellbeing. Self-efficacy, goal-setting and problem-solving are all ways to manage self-management and these depend on the health of your emotional state. In contrast self-management strategies that boost health, like exercise and stress reduction can enhance the quality of life and mental health of life. Many ways it doesn’t make sense to focus on physical health and emotional health as well.
Being able to avoid mental illnesses doesn’t indicate the absence of mental health. Research is proving that they are distinct and related aspects. Mental well-being is defined by the presence of positive emotion (e.g. optimism, joy and enthusiasm) as well as the absence of negative affect and a sense of satisfaction. On the other hand mental illness is defined by shifts in mood, thinking or behaviour that are associated with stress or impaired functioning.
Why Address Mental Wellbeing in the Workplace?
The wellbeing of body and the mind can’t be separated. The effects of one affect the other. So, a well-balanced mind is a good thing and can contribute in a well-being body, and vice the reverse.
Mental illness is costly for employers and affects the productivity of employees and their performance. Similar to the physical condition, mental health may be seen as an ongoing continuum. On one side is mental health, while mental illness can be found at the other end.
Mental health is generally defined as the achievement of mental functionthat results in successful activities, fulfilling relations, and an capability to adjust to changes and challenge. These are the domains that are generally called wellbeing.
Mental illness encompasses diseases that have traditional psychiatric diagnoses, like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and more. Health and mental illnesses can be influenced by many factors such as biology and genetics, as well as their interaction with environmental and social influences.
Employers tackle employee health with an integrated framework. The multi-strategy framework could be used to guide an employer’s strategy for mental health, too. A holistic approach includes promotion and prevention, intervention and monitoring. It is essential to realize that mental health promotion has to be of equal importance to the treatment and prevention of mental illnesses.
The current wellness programs for workplaces must address all aspects of employee health and not just physical health.
