“It’s on you now.”
Bonfire of the Vanities: Combust
Chapter Nine
Nick:
“And while we’re at it, you need to make a decision, Jill. It’s time to make a decision. Everybody likes you, everyone wants you in the crew. They’re getting used to you, you know. It’s time to fish or cut bait.”
Jill shut her eyes. She could not believe what he was saying. Nikola sniffed.
Nick:
“You should just quit. I want you to quit. I know that is what you want to do and I’m not going to try to stop you. I’ve done enough begging. But you need to stand up and tell them that’s what you want to do.”
Jill:
“Nikola, you did this. This is all your fault. Whatever you are talking about is baloney and cheese.”
Jill watched Nikola’s face closely and she was certain a slight smile broke through his stern veneer.
Nick:
“Baloney, cheese, mayo, mustard—it doesn’t matter now. I can’t undo what I did, Jill. It’s on you now.”
Jill walked away from Nikola as fast as she could. Tears were near to overflowing the rims of her eyes. She fought them back. She was glad it was on her. That was just where it needed to be.
She would take control. She couldn’t leave it in the hands of people like Nikola who tried to do and say anything they wanted. It was time she made things happen.
