• Expository Preaching II

  • Chapter 3

  • Chapter 4

  • Preach as if the unbeliever is present.

  • Outside the Sunday morning setting.

    1. In what ways do you think clergy beliefs affect one’s preaching? It affects what topics they will choose. If they don’t believe the Bible is God’s Word they won’t focus on it. It they think that Jesus is one among many good teachers then they are likely to use the teachings of any teacher.
    2. How do some of the current cultural teachings conflict with your belief system? Evolution crashes into my belief that God created the world. My belief that Scripture is God’s Word is not held by current culture.
    3. What does the emphasis on the individual mean to preaching? That a focus on personal renewal is more likely. Less of a focus on the community in ministry efforts.
    4. What are the issues you face as you consider the sexual and social concerns Robinson discusses? Right now I don’t think I face any issues. I feel sort of isolated from much of society. I don’t have time to much else than work, study and spend time with my family.
    5. How do you think you would have responded had you been questioned by the poll? More to the conservative side of the survey.
    1. When faced with difficulties in ministry, what are some of the issues preachers are tempted to preach about? The temptation is for self therapy. The focus is more on self. Also to attack the thing or person that has hurt you. There can be a failure to preach the full counsel of God. What does Haddon suggest preachers focus on instead? Continue to focus on God’s grace.
    2. What is the family’s role in preaching through pain? They help us keep a reality check. They keep us honest.
    3. How can the preacher check his or her motives when preparing to preach? Being honest with self. Sticking to the text and admitting that they are struggling with something difficult in their lives.
    4. What are some of the dangers that preachers face when experiencing pain? They want to speak about the pain and not the text.
    5. What difficulty are you currently facing in your ministry? How have you responded to it in your preaching? Time. I don’t have enough.

    • Prescriptive preaching answers the “So What?” question.
What is the timeless truth here? AND What does it have to do for me?

What is transformative in the text?
