Growing vs. Easy Believism
The growth process
Ephesians 4:17-24
What does it mean to be completely sanctified?
Is that possible here on Earth?
“The bible was not given to increase your knowledge but to guide your conduct”—How do you feel about that quote?
TWO MISTAKES WE OFTEN MAKE
1) It is seen as a rulebook
2) God’s acceptance and blessing in our lives depends on how well we do following the bible
1) HOLY SPIRIT: the only way we can even come close to following some to most of the “rules”
2)Saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Our day to day acceptance is not about what we do but about what God already did! Ephesians 2:8
“Easy Believism”— Since I asked Christ to be my Savior, I am on my way to heaven regardless of how I live. It doesn’t matter if I continue in my sinful lifestyle. God loves and will accept me anyway.
Scripture Hebrews 5: 11-14
Romans 6:1-14
What does it mean to grow/ what does it look like?
Struggles with growth
Unfortunately no. We must always keep focused on the Gospel because it is in the nature of sanctification that as we grow, we see more and more of our sinfulness. Instead of driving us to disappointment and discouragement, we are driven to the gospel. It is the gospel believed every day that is the only enduring motivation to pursue sanctification even in those times when we don’t seem to see progress. We need to preach the gospel to ourselves everyday.
The bible is far more than a rulebook to follow. It is the message of God’s saving grace through Jesus Christ. Everything pointing to the Cross and after the cross, including the sanctification process.
It is not ONLY to gain knowledge, but to also be obeyed and practically applied in our daily lives (James 1:22)
What does it mean when Paul Says we died to Sin?
Admitting we are dead to sin
Always involves our practice of spiritual disciplines. Reading scripture, praying, and regularly fellowshipping with other believers.
Also, putting to death the sinful deeds of the body (Romans 8:13)
Looking at the Character of God to guide us
Holy Spirit!!!
Fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23
We decide the gospel is only for unbelievers—When we don’t apply the gospel to our own lives we get the—baseline of acceptable performance
As you go down the list you become more vulnerable to self-righteousness
The Dominion of Sin
1) Adams Sin— point-in-time event; JUSTIFICATION or salvation Genesis 15:6. Its that simple
2) Our own sin—SANCTIFICATION
If we died to Sin why do we struggle with it?
If we didn’t struggle then that means you don’t feel conviction
No one is perfect and therefore sin will still occur in your life but only the unbeliever will not struggle for he doesn’t recognize the wrong of sin in his life
If we don’t struggle, we let sin win, in our hearts and lives we declare Christ was not enough. Is there salvation in that? nope
