ADHD and medication
I ran into this mom’s post when I was researching something and tore my heart as a parent myself I have great compassion for her.
I didn’t want to have my son labelled, but the funding he required for additional resources during school meant that I was forced to, along with many other parents. It also meant that we were virtually compelled to trial drugs that left him either enraged or suicidal as an 8 year old. One day, I hope I’ll be able to forgive myself. I did my best, but it wasn’t really enough.

Aren’t we too quick to label children with ADHD?

and the story of choreographer
Sir Ken Robinson tells a wonderful story of a (now famous) choreographer/dancer who was sent to a specialist because she was a ‘difficult’ child. Thankfully, the specialist left her in a room with music playing and stepped back to show her mother that she wasn’t difficult at all - she was just a dancer, not a class-room sitter.
As Sir Ken goes on to say, luckily ADHD wasn’t an available condition then, so the world wasn’t robbed of her talent.
It would seem that until we reform the education system from a factory-based model, the labels will continue to mis-inform young people about their identities.
Identity ; from habit book
Once a child has a deficit label this will determine their self-concept. We need to help children identify their strengths so they have something positive to live up to.
how labels can actually condition the kids behaviour. I’m not talking about the medical labelling – ADHD being the big one, or ADD as it was then – but the risk of generalised labelling over the 10 or 12 years of a child. The key here is to remember that they are CHILDREN!
The permanent damage to young ones
The work of Jane Elliot in her ‘Blue Eyed/Brown Eyed’ approach to labels and racism showed clearly entrenched perspectives that impact on how kids see themselves and how others also treat them.
The other involved teachers being informed about certain kids in their glass being ‘gifted’ to test the idea of a self fulfilling prophecy. The labels had an immense impact - see http://www.intropsych.com/ch15_social/expectancy.html

No parents want their child being labeled and they are doing their best they can.

I regard as reprehensible the burgeoning practice of schools acting as stalking horses for the pharmaceutical industry by compelling parents to put their kids on often experimental, highly addictive drugs for which there has been little research into the long-term effects.
labeling is for medical administrative and educational convenience.
