  • Random acts of kindness can go a lot further than a ‘what’s yours is yours, what’s mine is mine’ attitude.

  • The most convenient and reliable method of communicating is by writing in the communication book, which is usually on the kitchen table. Whether it’s a note about food, chores, guests or complaints, writing it down allows everyone to see it at their own convenience.

I encourage you to share any complaints or frustrations you may have, even minor ones. One person may not be aware that they’re doing something that bothers another, so they will continue doing it thinking it’s OK. Leaving a quick note for all to read prevents resentments from building up.

    • Please keep front door locked at all times. This is a high theft neighbourhood and there are grab-and-run thefts as well as break-ins, even on a Monday morning at 9am.

      • Double check that door is locked when you’re leaving
      • Always lock door when you return home
      • Turn outdoor light off if it’s on at bedtime
      • Check to see that outdoor light is turned off when you’re leaving in the morning
      • Patio door needs to be locked at all times
      • In warm weather it is left locked open so Nina can come and go

I would greatly appreciate if the first person up in the morning could let Nina out, if she is downstairs. You can leave her outside until I get up.

      • Washing machine is double size and runs long cycles
      • Please do not do small loads
      • Full load should be close to the top when dry
      • If your load is small, ask roommate to add their laundry

      • I use the Normal Cycle with Tap Cold Water most often

      • For whites and dishtowels I use a warmer cycle
      • Please don’t run the Whitest Whites or Heavy Duty Cycle

      • Please purchase laundry liquid suitable for Hi-Efficiency machines [has Hi-Efficiency logo on container]

      • I try to air dry items whenever possible to save energy
      • There are various hangers above dryer to use for hang drying clothes
      • Please run dryer with a full load
      • Gently shut the door - do not slam it
      • Remove lint before taking your clothes out
      • Dryer uses tons of energy so I am careful with the cycles
      • Best to run dryer on AUTO cycle lining up the 2 lines on knob, below ‘less dry’
      • Check on your clothes and add more time if needed
      • Dryer sensor is old and if you choose the ‘more dry’ option it will cook your clothes for hours
      • If you use the timed cycle, please do 30 minutes first, then check if you need more time
      • AUTO cycle with cooldown is best for keeping your clothes wrinkle free, especially if you are there to take them out as soon as it stops

If I came across your clothes in the dryer I would take them out and hang them on various hooks and hangers to prevent it from further wrinkling

      • The Persian rugs are my prized possession and I will take care of vacuuming them [they can be damaged by vacuum cleaner]
      • TV is inside black corner cabinet
      • Feel free to watch TV or use the living room anytime
      • Rinse all food off dishes
      • Soak in sink if needed
      • Place dishes tightly and with spray access
      • Sharp pointy tips go in compartment with sponge at bottom
      • Pots, pans, large bowls get hand washed
      • Please don’t run dishwasher until it is completely full
      • Ensure both sprayers can spin before turning ON
      • Extra hot wash and heat drying OFF, but can use Heavy cycle
      • Place magnet sign on door indicating dirty or clean dishes

      • When emptying dishwasher, use a fresh clean dish cloth [in oven] to wipe all cutlery and check each dish for cleanliness

      • Used dishcloths harbour bacteria
      • Area around the kitchen sink has more dangerous bacteria around it than a toilet seat
      • Please wipe water around sink after use, especially the back
      • Squeeze water out of sponges to keep them dry and keep separate in sponge holder
      • If hand washing dishes, don’t keep water continually running
      • Water drips from sink area to floor
      • Please wipe any water or food droppings from kitchen floor after use
      • Pots and pans are kept in the bottom drawer of the stove
      • Other items are stored inside stove

      • Garbage is under sink

      • Recycling is in big round bin by stairs
      • Put only clean dry items in recycling as it has to get sorted by hand at the outdoor bins

      • Cleaning supplies and hand-vac are kept under sink

      • Please don’t charge hand-vac until the battery is low

      • Try to keep items on shelves organized especially since there are no doors and it is all visible

      • Freezer door has weak magnet so please make sure it is properly shut and keep items from pushing on door
      • If there is an extra latch on freezer door, try not to rip it off by accident
      • If freezer is full and you’re adding items, please organize neatly

      • Keep fridge neat inside and wipe up any spills or sticky items

      • Please wipe the stove clean after use
      • Check that nothing spilled into the black burner bowls
      • The burned smell encountered if the previous person left the stove dirty is very unpleasant and goes straight upstairs
      • Stove oven is used for storage
      • Convection oven handles pizza and baking
      • Pull it out from under the cupboard to avoid heating up food on shelves
      • There are tricks to turning it on, so please ask
      • Use foil on bottom and leave it clean after use
      • When boiling water turn spout away from cabinets and wall to avoid steam damage
      • Press the blue button to release your toast
      • Pulling up the lever will break the toaster
