Humanity 2.0 - Notes

Give a man a fish, teach a man to fish 0 better. Governments etc. trying to optimize the fishing industry, which is great.

I’m telling you you’re all trying to fish in the wrong waters, and I’m trying to lead humanity to different, but much better waters to fish in

Behind the scenes series

Documenting involvement with others

Creating the first HuG Love photos

  • general explanation of the idea of HuG Love / using HuG as a marketing tool for the project
  • the thought processes behind it - people, colours, an easy way to unite people behing a common cause, hug = abrazo
  • the end photos and the behind-the-scenes photos that Indra took
  • story about Lucas ‘apurate’
  • reactions of the people helping
  • people’s reaction to the first photos
  • things that learned
    • need to be high up
    • better shoes
    • lighting for the sun
  • plans to take it further (kids in school, India, friends from around the world)
  • how it kickstarted the FB page

HuG Love photos with kids in local school

  • try to get 100 kids to do HuG Love photos
  • talking to them about the project, and trying to be an inspiration to them
    • show them the value of thinking about others and trying to help
    • encourage them to follow their dreams
    • being a cultural ambassador (to the kids and adults)

Interview-style posts?

Getting the tone / organization of the project right

  • not come across too heavy
  • not try to create resentment
  • hit the right tone
  • right amount of info / well-presented
  • getting feedback from others
  • the process of involvement / listening to other

Preparation for the project

  • personal mental preparation
  • developing as a person - learning humility the hard way / being confronted with, accepting and trying to correct for one’s failings
  • waiting for technology to catch up
  • planning for marketing
  • not wanting to use investors
  • the world being ready

Long-term personal goals (of Marcus) for the project

talk about :

  • balance between personal life / goals
  • plans for a family
  • place that want to live (what’s good for the project, personally and family)

Leave-me-be rooms

Balloons when come out… BiG HuG

Sound proof

Objects to throw inside

Things to punch

Go in frustrated, come out with love

Can work inside, but if going are to throw around things, then have protectors too

Give a certain amount of leeway for bit personal traumas

HU is an attempt to persuade humanity to adopt a better global socio-economic model, so we can sort out the world’s major problems before it’s too late.

  • We have a new model to support humanity
  • We have a realistic implementation plan
  • We will help those most in need as much as we can at every stage
  • We just need a little funding to get the ball rolling

A globally-distributed think tank that is dedicated to developing solutions to humanity’s most fundamental problems.

For now we are all volunteers, but our hope is to be able to form a formal organization with a successful crowd-funding campaign

nb. - change ‘co-ordinator’ to ‘liaison’ - or just declare everyone as volunteers / state where they’re from, and a little background - maybe particularly interested in certain areas, e.g. kids / skills

  • Want to be a part of the team
  • Discuss the whole HuG plan, and provide input on site, implementation plan, difficulties etc
  • Note : site IS NOT ready yet, so don’t do it yet (2+ months)
  • Talk about the values of the people
  • If have useful contacts that might be able to help (especially pro economists, people who run social enterprises…)

Be honest about not wanting to be famous

Don’t want to add stress to family

Risk to family

Fairly private person

Don’t answer economic questions before have the complete answer to it

Understand the responsability that I have

Don’t want to say things before confirming with the best economic minds in the world

Bad answers from me on public media could have a negative effect on the lives of people I don’t know in the world because of bad image / me looking like I don’t know what I’m doing

Just say that many of the best economic experts in the world have said that they agree with the principles of what I’m doing and my model, and before making things public we’re ironing out the details

I just feel that it’s the responsible thing to do

All key ideas in Christianity and humanism

Hell = internal torment

God = goodness

Biblical world is a metaphor for how to be a good person - at least the Last Testament

Humanity was created with the concept of goodness, through evolution

The ‘creator’ of the universe is the physics of all that exists

When praying to God in fact are praying to the inner goodness and hope within onself

Sins are normal - but the true repentance is how you learn and change to become a better person and not repeat your sins

His impressions of what the reincarnation of Christ would be

Save humanity from itself

Willing to die for that

I’ve always felt that it was my mission to save humanity but didn’t know how until later

Significant that I learnt Spanish in Argentina?

And was living in Argentina when he became Pope

Have no desire to make it public, just want to know his opinion

Foretelling of a future situation in humanity that required / produced another person to lead humanity to a new light

Can help with the transition?

Hug me in public

Publically approve of what I’m doing

Don’t share selfies

Share ideas about org

Do so with team and leader

Have people to stop me being too drunk

Hugs with everyone

Jokes - give up (April Fool’s joke)

The German Ideology - Part I (1845-6, pub 1932)

Difference between Marx that wrote Das Kapital, and the earlier Marx

Largely an attack on contemporary German philosophy

Philosophy is largely a product of your social class

Could have been because he didn’t get a professorship

Attack on Hegel?

Ideas drive history - predominant idea of the time - Spirit - Hegel

Human beings are products of their own time

Repetitive, irritable, sarcastic rant

Co-authored with Engels, but main part written by Marx

Young Hegelians were concerned with the theological parts of Hegel - absolute spirit - phenomenology is like a picture of the evolution of consciousness

Wrt history, like a collective understanding of humanity gradually understanding itself

Communist Manifesto (1848)

General notes

Co-authored by Friedrich Engels

Capital - Volume I (1867)

General notes

Co-authored by Friedrich Engels

“For a ruthless criticism of everything existing”

Take different radically different conceptual blocks and rub them together to make revolutionary fire - deconstruction

Adam Smith, Steward - commentaries

Conceptual blocks in Capital

Political economy

late 18th, early 19th C

Mainly English, some French

Locke, Hobbes, Hume, Adam Smith, Ricardo, Malthus (negates), Stewart…

Three volumes - Theories of Surface Value

What’s missing?

German classical critical philosophy

Stretches back to the Greeks

Wrote dissertation on Epicurus

Spinoza, Leibniz, Hagel, Kant…

Read Hagel before Marx and it’s easy

Utopian socialist tradition

Primarily French, some English

Robert Owen, Thomas Moore

1830s/40s French

Etienne Cabet - Icarians, US post 1848

Prudent, Saint Simon, Fourier (negation), Malthus (neg)

Very critical of the Utopians who want to create an ideal society ‘over there’ without any idea of how to get from here to there

Marx wanted to convert the utopian socialist project into a scientific socialist project

Can’t take English empiricism, needs to create a new scientific method - the three sections

Marx often draws from the utopians more than he wants to admit - dismisses them as part of failure of the 1948 revolution

Makes great use of Saint Simon, and by negation of Fourier, like negated Malthus (PE)

Should read book in Marx’s terms

Prefaces - esp French edition (suggested that it shouuld come out as a feuilleton series)

1872 - Praised idea, as would be more accessible to the working class, which to him outweighs everything else - that is the good side of your suggestion - French impatient to come to a conclusion - first few chapters are particularly arduous

First few chapters particularly arduous

Its method

The particular way he sets up his project

To understand how a capitalist mode of production works

Has in mind that it’ll be a huge project

Has to set up the conceptual apparatus to understand all the complexity that exists

Method of inquiry is different from his method of presentation

Method of inquiry starts with everything that’s going on - reality as experience it

Start with descriptions of reality by economists, by novelists…

Then search in that material for some simple, fundamental concepts - The Method of Descent

Then come back to the surface - behind the world of appearance, there’s another way to analyse it

Like Freud - pioneers it in social science

In Capital, starts with his conclusions - the deep concepts

Lays them out very simply / directly

Ask yourself where everything comes from

Half the time you have no idea what he’s talking about

After a while understand what he means - Value Theory / Argument etc

Starts with the concept of the commodity - not class struggle / money / labour

Also hard because setting up for all 3 volumes

All 3 volumes only about 1/8 of what he had in mind

  1. The general abstract determinants which attain more or less in all forms of society
  2. The categories that make up the inner structure of bourgeois society and on which the fundamental classes rest - capital, wage-labour, property, their inter-relation, town and country, he three great social classes - exchange between them, circulation, the credit system, private
  3. Concentration of bourgeois society in the form of the state, viewed in relation to itself - the unproductive classes, taxes, state debt, public credit, the population, the colonies, emigration
  4. The international relations of production, international division of labour, international exchange, export/import, rate of exchange
  5. The world market and crises

Never took up most of those topics

Vol 1 just looking at the standpoint of production

Vol 2 - exchange

Vol 3 - crisis formation, rules of distribution, interest, rent, taxes

Marx’s use of dialectics - in dialects we find a completely different concept of analysis - hardly any causal language - nearly always says ‘this is dialectically related to that’ (inner relation, not a causal relation)

Talks about this in the postface to 2nd edition - OK I took some ideas from Hagel, but dialectical position absolutely opposite to it (revolutionized, not inverted it)

De-mystified the form of dialectic presented by Hagel (fashion in Germany) - why it was that he had to form it in such a way that it could take account of every historical developed form as being in a state of motion - had to reform it so it could grasp the transient aspects of a society as well

Does not let itself be impressed by anything

Use dialectical method to establish relations between elements in his system - in a way to capture fluidity / motion

Often talked about as a static, structural analyst - but he sees the movement

Best place to understand his dialectical method - Captial

Young kids are great at dialectics

Everything in motion - labour process, value does not exist unless it’s in motion, when things stop value stops, Bush on TV ad - get back in motion

Motion is substantiated in a capitalist mode of production

Analytical Marxism

Positive Marxism - causative

Read through Capital many times (every year?)

Engage with text in terms of meaning in own life

Changes style in different sections

Part 1 : Commodities and Money

Chapter 1 : Commodities

Section 1 : The two factors of a commodity - use value and value

Core concepts

The commodity - good place to start- familiar to everyone, common denominator

Commodity - meets a human want or need

How many commodities are there - millions of them

Use value

Use value - abstracting, very fast

Brings use value back into value

Exchange value

Also ‘the material bearers of exchange value’

Exchange value appears to be something accidental and purely relative, consequently intrinsic value seems a contradiction

Exchange value must be reducible to this third thing - cannot be geometrical, physical, chemical, or other natural properties of commodities - not materialistic (cannot look at commodity to find its commensurability / exchangability)

Exchange value is a representation of its value - gap between the two

Value (human labour)

Have to view the value in motion

If forget use value, only one property remains - all the product of human labour + exchange value represents that quality - merely congealed quantities of homogenous human labour

Value is what is passed on the the process of commodity exchange (p127 ish)

Value is always in motion

Quantity is measured by the duration of the labour put into the thing - which has measures

Def (Value): Socially-necessary labour-time is the labour time required to produce any use value under the conditions of production normal for a given society, and with the average degree of intensity and skill of labour in that society

Value changes with productivity

Thing / process

A ‘thing’ is a representation of a process

The process is objectified by the thing

Capitalist mode of production sets up a certain mode of temporality

Total value of the labour of society - manifested in the world of commodities

Each of these units is the same as any other to the extent that it has the character of a socially average unit of labour power, and acts as such

Meaning of the objectification changes with time

Use value differs in quality, exchange value only in quantity - therefore exchange value does not come out of usefulness

If want use value of something, then can’t have exchange value - and vice-versa

General comments

Not is - something else going on

Concerned only with the Capitalist mode of production

Presents his ideas like classical political economists - idealistic

Repeats himself a lot

Analysis that is not causal

Can’t talk about any one of these concepts without talking about the other

Like Ricardo - labour time as value, difference ‘socially necessary’

Talking about values when supply and demand are in equilibrium

House - maybe has the same use value, and a residual exchange value, but that might change with a revolution in house-building

Concept of value would be different in hybrid system

What other types of value systems would want

Environmental value

Mistake in Socialism - take Marxist definition of value in a normalistic way

But… value is inherent in capitalist mode of production

If want to have a different set of value, then have to overthrow a capitalist mode of production

What is ‘socially necessary’ - different at different points in time in different places

On homepage, give general intro, then ask the user to choose the areas of specific interest

Argument against in computer simulation

  • Premise - infinity cannot exist in the real universe
    — Should be obvious

  • Assume that some highly advanced civilization could record position of each planck-length ‘spatial unit’ (PLSU) using one PLSU
    — Dubious, since it would likely require more volume to do so

  • If all PLSU’s are recorded, would require at least the size of the monitored universe (MU) just to map the MU

  • If not all recorded, but all are monitored (as would be necessary for it to work), the size would automatically be larger than the MU (since whatever system was monitoring would need to monitor all possible internal monitorings and dynamically create the appropriate responses, in real time) [NOTE: this might not be perfectly correct, but would still require something approaching the size of the MU at least)

All created universes would need to be as large as the MU

  • If PL is the same in all parent universes, then follows from previous arguments
  • PL in child universes cannot be smaller than the original PL
  • If PL in child universes is bigger than parent PL, PL would increasingly become larger such that the laws of physics would need to be changed with each successive creation (in a way which would have to be mapped, since would not be from the parent universe, which would also require a created universe at least as large as the MU
    — if PL(child) = PL(parent)/2 - PL would become increasingly large
    — would still require increasing ‘matter’

Eventually the original universe would be too small

Since all child MU’s would need to be at least as large as the space they monitor (regardless of the model used for creating a child universe), there would be a number of created universes for which the original universe would be too small, or not have enough ‘usable material’ (matter/energy in our universe would be one part of this)

NOTE: the argument could be made for matter / energy / space (or equivalent analogies in parent universes)

This does not mean that we are NOT in a simulation, but it makes the chances low that we are in a depth of a very high number of them
