• Ontario Honey Producers Co-operative

The co-operative is a beekeeper-first effort to stabilize and expand the Ontario honey market for the benefit of both conscious consumers and the beekeeping industry.

  • This public outline is intended to promote transparency and democratization of the co-operative with an open invitation to take part, no matter if you are a hobby beekeeper or if you are shipping truckloads of honey. You aren’t ‘just’ a hobby beekeeper, nor are you less important than a multi-generational commercial operation. In the co-operative, one beekeeper-supplier equals one vote.

  • Hi, my name is Conor Cleary, and I’m a beekeeper. That in itself isn’t anything special - there are lots of beekeepers. Hobbyists with a couple of hives, commercial pollinators with transport truck loads driving through the night.

However, one thing unites all of us - honey. I was told something once that is a valuable perspective for our business: beekeepers get into beekeeping for the bees, but they get out of it because of the honey.

Ironically, they usually have too much of it. The fun part about beekeeping is working with bees! Not marketing and jarring and putting on labels and sitting at trade shows… But a service that helps beekeepers in Ontario with their honey abundance (or lack of) would help the honeybee population thrive.

This is why I’m reviving the Ontario Honey Producers Co-operative, and here is my plan to do it.

  • Commercial interests may not see the appeal of a honey producers co-operative that is just starting out. The goal of this initiative is to benefit a large operation in the long term as much as it will benefit a sideliner or hobbyist in the starting days. Working together will enable such a future.

  • We are seeking a cohesive collection of entrepreneurial members of the following groups:

    • Beekeepers (known as beekeeper-suppliers within the co-op)
    • Consumers (including store/resto owners and buyers-for)
    • Logistics & supply chain professionals
      • Trucking, freight, and shipping experience
      • Import/export experience
    • Lawyer/law & paralegal professionals
    • Contract and negotiation specialists
    • Marketing and advertising personnel

All of the above are including but not limited to. There are no obtuse restrictions for gainful involvement in the co-operative initiatives.

  • Beekeeper-suppliers

The first few years of operation will not be high-volume in terms of the ability to handle honey.
