Special mechanics (aspects, skills, and stunts)
This will be taking place on a distant planet that has been sought out because it is a known prison for gems deemed ‘troublesome’ by the homeworld.
As a gem, you will be part of a rebel force seeking out powerful gems to join their forces against home world. There is supposedly a prison of unwanted gems on the planet.
As a native, you’re one of two displaced species who has been trying to survive after the cataclysmic destruction wrought by homeworlds mining and subsequent abandonment of the planet. Not everyone believes the myths surrounding the gems after many generations of their absence but there is no doubt that someone did something horrible to your planet.
Gems as items
If a gemstone becomes broken, it can effect the Gem in a variety of ways. The severity of the break and the cause can determine how it effects the player character. Sometimes it will cause a new aspect to be given to the player, either temporary or permanent, or it could change the appearance. The change can also allow the Gem to achieve feats it wouldn’t normally achieve.
When Amythest breaks her gem she can’t control the shape of her body or speak properly. This was a serious break, that got worse with time.
Lapis Lazuli’s crack was minor and stable and made her behave brashly and emotionally, but also with unparalled shows of power and strength that she wouldn’t normally exhibit.
If a gem has taken enough physical stress, they will lose their additional form and revert to nothing but the gem itself. To prevent them from regenerating, they can be placed inside a suppressing force bubble.
Characters who take large amounts of stress will be reduced to just their gem. If this occurs, they are removed from the current scene and will reappear at the beginning of the next round unless they are particularly good at regenerating.
If they are, they can regenerate into the current scene without any kind of strong penalty but only if they succed in excess on a will role.
Some gems, instead of simply being forced into their gem form and bubbled are forcibly inserted into pieces of technology where they are only semi concious and used as a sort of AI or advanced operating system and power source for the technology.
If two gems want to fuse together, since we are not dancing in person, they must have corrosponding poetry that will allow them to fuse when recited
A fused gem will recieve skill bonuses of both originating gems but to a maximum of 10 skills, like a starting character would have
They will retian all previous stunts and aspects, even those that directly contradict. If the contradicting aspects are brought up, a will save must be made to stay fused. If either of the individual player characters fail the will save, they seperate.
As a part of the fusing, they will gain one additional stunt that needs to be decided at the time of the fusion.
The character should be played jointly until the two players chose to separate or are forced to.
This skill reflects how well someone is at using their own gem to do things like shape shift, create objects, and store stuff in their gem. It can also effect how long before a gem regenerates.
In addition to the usual abilities afforded by the will skill, you can also use will to control gem powered items.
Because the objects are self aware and often forcibly put in that position, they can be difficult to use. This skill allows a gem to be good at using these types of items
This is an alternative to drive. Some gems may be able to fly, and the absumi can fly. It works very similarly to drive.
as a stunt, characters can materialise a weapon or other item (ie pearls holograms). +2 to Use Gem when creating objects.
As the name suggests, this is the ability to change forms. While most gems can change shapes, not all of them are naturally attuned to it. +2 to use gem when shape shifting.
This allows the character to create holograms that are more convincing and more functional the greater their skill. +2 to Use Gem when creating a hologram.
items can be stored inside of the gem and can actually be entered by other people
Once friends with Rose Quartz, Moonstone was in a different prison planet before being released by sympathetic homeworld gems. Unaware of the results of the fight on earth because of the destruction of the warp pads, Moonstone continues to seek out Rose Quartz and other rebelious gems
Obsidian is the muscle of the rebel group travelling in Amber. She has a wry sense of humor and jumps at the opportunity to see new places and people. When in combat her lighthearted personality drops away as she is a very vicious, dangerous combatant. She has a large number of piercings; she gets a new one for each gem they successfully rescue from prisons.
Amber is a slow, simple minded Gem whose shape is maleable. She presents usually as a giant cicada like ship whose wings act as solar sails. She is very passive and old. She is actually old enough to remember the creation of the imprisoned gems, though unless asked she does not think to offer up this information.
When Amber does take action, it is often based on long ambling trains of thought that she has worked on for months or even years before deciding to act. As a result, most of the other gems find her independent decisions to be irrational or difficult to understand.
Gems are sentient crystalline lifeforms. When damaged they revert back to a large crystal until they have regained enough energy to recreate mobile forms. There are a variety of Gems, each kind serving a specific purpose in the culture of their homeworld. Rebel gems have betrayed this strict cast system, taking on roles of their own choosing and trying to carve out a way to live peacefully despite the expansionist and warlike culture they deny. Some gems can create their own weapons, some can shift form, and some have psychic abilities. Two gems can also fuse to create a new gem, and for the purposes of roleplaying, the character would be controlled jointly for the duration of the fuse.
Broken Gems are Gems whose stone is broken or flawed, causing a variety of issues and conflicts. Sometimes it is reflected physically; missing limbs, strange disfigurements. Other times it is manifests psychologically, as rage, confusion, memory loss, depression. At least one aspect for a PC Broken Gem should reflect this to some degree, and in the event that the gem is healed, they will need to reflect that in aspect.
They resemble a bat with a large barrel chest.
They have strong sexual dimorphism.
a large instectoid species lives along side the bat people. However they are very shy and are more of a rumour than a fact amoung the Infletius
They have a similar structure to glow worms and eat minerals as well as fungus and moss.
Description: Sonya is an unusually large male of their species. They were born into an important clan and their large size forced them to join females in the Infletius equivalent of a military (though in truth this military is more like a well armed emergency response team, as there aren’t really political conflicts among the people). Sonya is comfortable with themselves, as are most people, though during mating season, the females look over Sonya. As a result they’ve spent much of their time exploring the areas that the rest of the population is uncomfortable with.
•High Concept: Insatiably curious
•Trouble: Attention span of a child
•1: Gentle giant
•2: Disconnected from own society
•Good(+3): will, investigate
•Fair(+2): Fight, rapport, notice
•Average(+1): resources, athletics, lore
Nose for Trouble. You can use Empathy instead of Notice to determine your turn order in a conflict, provided you’ve gotten a chance to observe or speak to those involved for at least a few minutes beforehand during this scene.
Name: Tick Tick
Description: Tick Tick has trouble digesting the mineral that allows for the glowing effect, so while he is not well received among his own people, he is able to stealthily move on the surface of the planet where they cannot. He is essentially a teenager and an optimistic one at that.
•High Concept: My body may be dark but my mind is bright like the stars
•Trouble: a decision thought on too long is a poor decision
•1: always seems to be where he isn’t supposed to
•2: enthusiastic is an understatement
•Great (+4): Stealth
•Good (+3): Notice, Athletics
•Fair (+2): Will, Burglary, Provoke
•Average (+1): deceive, physique, Fight, investigate
Always a Way Out. +2 on Burglary rolls made to create an advantage whenever you’re trying to escape from a location.
In the Gem homeworld, Tinaksite and Charoite work in tandem, forming an exceptionally effective scouting team when exploring new worlds. They are harvested from the same kindergardens in pairs, working together from formation onward. This particular team never worked in a balance and found themselves unwelcome among the others of their gemtype. Tinaksite tends to be excessively orderly, to the point of paranoia, which maddens the slovenly Charoite. Tinaksite’s mentality worked well in the presence of the homeworld society, but her Charoite companion made it impossible to remain, as a Tinaksite on her own is considered to be of little value.
•High Concept: Everything has a place, a function, and a purpose
•Trouble: uncomfortably outspoken
•1: reads people like books, but treats them like manuals
•2: unwilling partner of charoite
•Good: Notice, Athletics
•Fair: Will, Fight, Shoot
•Average: Stealth, Burglary, Use Gem, Investigate
Shield of Reason. You can use Lore as a defense against Provoke attempts, provided you can justify your ability to overcome your fear through rational thought and reason.
Sprinter. You move two zones for free in a conflict without rolling, instead of one, provided there are no situation aspects restricting movement.
Charoite is the counterpart to Tinaksite and where their gemtypes usually work in tandem, the inflexibility of Tinaksite to accept irregularities or unexpected events made it nearly impossible for them to function together. Charoite was forced to leave homeworld despite her love of exploration and discovery of the unknown in order to keep Tinaksite’s almost neurotic obsession with order out of sight of the homeworld higher-ups.
High Concept: What hasn’t been discovered is only motivation for tomorrow
•Trouble: Plans are usually their own worst enemy
•1: Always Ready for trouble
•2: Worries over Tinaksite
•Good: Use Gem, Provoke
•Fair: Will, Rapport, Burglary
•Average: Notice, Athletics, Physique, Shoot
Heavy Hitter. When you succeed with style on a Fight attack and choose to reduce the result by one to gain a boost, you gain a full situation aspect with a free invocation instead.
Pounamu is a artist gem. Depicting the glory of the Gem Homeworld and its victories in murals throughout the victories. When she inserted a mural of the defeat of Pink Diamond into the Homeworlds art she was only just barely a step ahead of the Ruby’s who hunted her as she escaped. Able to be clever and resourceful, her head is often in the clouds.
•High Concept: Renegade artist
•Trouble: Focus is is easier said than done
•1: really does behave like there is no tomorrow
•2: her cleverness is limited only by her pessimism
•Great: craft (architecture/art)
•Fair: Gem Use, Empathy, Provoke,
•Average: Notice, Stealth, Fight, Investigate
Always Making Useful Things. You don’t ever have to spend a fate point to declare that you have the proper tools for a particular job using Crafts, even in extreme situations (like being imprisoned and separated from all your stuff). This source of opposition is just off the table.
Enargite is a fast talking gem who is also a skilled fighter. She was a former intelligence asset for the gem homeworld, but abandoned her post in favor of the rebellion after seeing first hand how hypocritical the homeworld gems are.
•High Concept: Spy with a heart of gold
•Trouble: Secretive to a fault
•1: working to make up for her past
•2: devoted to her team
•Great: Use Gem
•Good: Shoot, Fight
•Fair: Rapport, Deceive, Stealth
•Average: Will, Burglary, provoke, Investigate
Called Shot. During a Shoot attack, spend a fate point and declare a specific condition you want to inflict on a target, like Shot in the Hand. If you succeed, you place that as a situation aspect on them in addition to hitting them for stress.
Lies upon Lies. +2 to create a Deceive advantage against someone who has believed one of your lies already during this session.
Katophorite is a laborer gem. Strong, typically unintelligent, but relatively brittle, this gemtype is very commonly used for gruntwork setting up kindergardens and similar structures. This particular Katophorite is secretly broken, and a side effect of this is that she is more intelligent than average, but clumsy and seemingly mad. She keeps the fact of her gem being broken hidden, for fear it will be ‘healed’ and she will lose the thing that made her different enough to leave homeworld.
•High Concept: Art and grace are only a tantalising dream
•Trouble: Crazy like a fox
•1: tough but cautious
•Good: athletics, physique
•Fair: lore, Gem use, notice
•Average: deceive, Provoke, investigate, Stealth
Killing Stroke. Once per scene, when you force an opponent to take a consequence, you can spend a fate point to increase the consequence’s severity (so mild becomes moderate, moderate becomes severe). If your opponent was already going to take a severe consequence, he must either take a severe consequence and a second consequence or be taken out.
Dazing Counter. When you succeed with style on a defend action against an opponent’s Fight roll, you automatically counter with some sort of nerve punch or stunning blow. You get to attach the Dazed situation aspect to your opponent with a free invoke, instead of just a boost.
The infletius have large females with a short gestation period. Because the females are so much more physically adept, they typically make up the majority of the working population while the males are expected to raise broods each mating season. In particular, the females populate the military, which is largely focused on combating natural disasters and the occasional gem that wanders out of the caves.
Using the pure but lifeless crystals found on the surface of the planet, they developed an optics system for information relay.
